Pruning Guide: When, How and Why You Should Prune

10 Ağustos 2026

Pruning is not simply “cutting away the extra”; it is the craft of directing a plant’s energy, preventing disease and extending its life. At Bozdağ Fidan, the problem we see most often in the field is pruning done at the wrong time or at the wrong angle, which ends up harming the plant.

The Benefits of Pruning

Regular pruning improves air circulation, reduces the risk of fungus and pests, increases yield in fruit trees and gives shape to ornamentals. Removing dead or diseased branches in time stops the problem from spreading to the whole plant.

The Right Time to Prune

  • Winter pruning (January–February): Ideal for deciduous fruit trees and ornamentals, done while the plant is dormant.
  • Summer pruning (June–July): Light pruning for shaping and controlling excess growth.
  • Post-bloom pruning: For early-spring bloomers (lilac, forsythia), done right after flowering ends.

Basic Pruning Techniques

  • Always cut close to a bud, at a slight angle.
  • Tools must be sharp and disinfected; dull blades crush the tissue and delay healing.
  • Never remove more than 25% of the plant’s total foliage in a single session.

Common Mistakes

The most frequent mistake we see is over-tight “topiary style” pruning that blocks sunlight from reaching the plant’s interior, causing branches to thin out and dry over time. Another common error is hard pruning in the wrong season, which in flowering species can eliminate that year’s bloom entirely.

Conclusion

Every species and every garden needs its own pruning calendar. Our Bozdağ Fidan team inspects the plants in your garden on site and prepares a custom pruning plan for you.
