Seasonal Planting Calendar: In Which Month Should You Plant?

“When should I plant my sapling?” is one of the most common questions we get at Bozdağ Fidan. While the exact answer varies by species, following a general calendar for the Aegean climate significantly improves survival rates.

Autumn (October–November): The Ideal Window

Autumn is the best time to plant deciduous trees, roses and most shrubs. The soil is still warm while the air has cooled; roots get time to establish before winter and emerge with a strong flush of growth in spring.

Winter (December–February): Bare-Root Planting

On frost-free days, bare-root fruit saplings (apple, pear, peach) can be planted during this period. If the soil is frozen, planting should be postponed.

Spring (March–April): The Second-Best Time

For species not hardy to winter cold (citrus, some tropical ornamentals), spring is the safer choice. Plants set in this period get time to establish roots before summer.

Summer (June–August): Avoid Planting

High heat and low humidity increase the risk of stress and poor root take in newly planted saplings. If planting is unavoidable, shading and frequent watering are essential — even then, success rates remain lower.

A Note on Container Plants

Container-grown saplings can, in theory, be planted any month of the year since their root structure stays intact — but autumn and spring remain the safest choices.
