Urban Gardening: Maximum Greenery on Your Balcony or Terrace

26 Temmuz 2026

Apartment living makes gardening harder, but not impossible. At Bozdağ Fidan, we regularly advise our urban customers on balcony and terrace planting; with the right planning, even a few square metres can become a lush green space.

Choosing the Right Pot

A drainage hole is non-negotiable when choosing a pot. Terracotta pots breathe but dry out faster; plastic pots retain moisture longer. On windy balconies, heavy, wide-base pots prevent tipping.

Suitable Species for Balconies

  • Aromatic herbs: Basil, mint, thyme, rosemary — a sunny corner near your kitchen is enough.
  • Flowering species: Petunia, geranium, bougainvillea — need at least 4–6 hours of sun daily for abundant blooms.
  • Shade-tolerant species: Hydrangea, ornamental fern, pothos — ideal for north-facing balconies.
  • Small fruits: Pot-grown pomegranate, mandarin, strawberry — productive and surprisingly easy.

Soil and Watering

Container soil differs from garden soil; choose a light, well-draining mix rich in organic matter. Because pots hold less water than open ground, balcony plants generally need more frequent watering than garden plants — but standing water at the bottom causes root rot.

Managing Wind and Sun

On upper-floor balconies, wind dries out leaves quickly; avoid large-leafed species or use a windbreak screen. South-facing balconies can overheat in summer, so light midday shading is beneficial.

Conclusion

Even without a garden, the right species and care can turn your balcony into a genuine green oasis. Our Bozdağ Fidan team prepares a custom plant list based on your balcony’s sun and wind conditions.
